The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline provides 24/7, seven days a week, free and confidential support for people in crisis and distress all over the U.S. The Lifeline, which launched this month last year, replaced the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number (1 800 273 8255).
Some highlights from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)’s report, 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline The First Year and Beyond report include:
- The 988 Lifeline has answered nearly 5 million contacts, nearly 2 million more than in the previous 12 months.
- Compared to the prior 12 months, text message contacts are up 1135%.
- The average speed to answer decreased from over two and a half minutes to 41 seconds.
- Ohio received $5,315,098 in funding to support local capacity for crisis services.
