Stevens Retires

Today, Associate Justice John Paul Stevens announced his retirement from the US Supreme Court, effective the day after the Court recesses this summer.  In a letter to President Obama, Stevens stated “it would be in the best interests of the Court to have my successor appointed and confirmed well in advance of the commencement of the Court’s next Term….”  Stevens has served on the Court since 19 December 1975.
