The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline provides 24/7, seven days a week, free and confidential support for people in crisis and distress all over the U.S. The service launched in July 2022, replacing the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

When you call, text or chat 988, this is what to expect.

Some highlights from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)’s performance metrics include:

• The 988 Lifeline has responded to over 24.5 million contacts, with almost 8 million contacts coming in by text or chat.
• Spanish language users call over 11,000 times a month.
