President James A. Garfield Papers Available Online

This week’s Ohio-related post is about James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States. The Library of Congress announced that the papers of Garfield, who was assassinated in the first year of his presidency, are now available in digital format. The Garfield collection includes approximately 80,000 items, mostly dating from 1850 to his death in 1881.

Garfield was born in Moreland Hills, Ohio (Cuyahoga County) and is interred in the county in Lake View Cemetery (pictured), where his tomb can be viewed by the public. Before becoming President, Garfield was a longtime member of the United States House of Representatives from Ohio and a Civil War General. Garfield was involved in two notable Civil War battles: Shiloh and Chickamagua.
