California Law on Pet Microchipping Would Be Nation’s First

California enrolled Senate Bill No. 702, if signed by the state governor, would be the nation’s first law requiring pet owners to have their dogs and cats microchipped. About the size of a grain of rice, microchips are implanted in pets, usually between the shoulder blades. The microchip number is then registered in a national database. The microchip can be wanded by a vet or animal shelter worker to read the information, which can help the pet get reunited with its owners. The Animal Law Blog commented recently on this bill, as did the Christian Science Monitor.
