1L Career Checklist
Some things to do when you return from winter break…
- Schedule a meeting (if you haven’t already)with your OCP counselor to go over your resume/cover letter and discuss your summer plans.
- Attend the Externship Information Session on January 19 at noon.
- Participate in our Mock Interview Program (Jan 27/28, Feb 3/4) – requires submission of approved resume.
- Keep an eye out for e-mails from OCP regarding employers recruiting on campus and collecting resumes
- Check Symplicity postings each week for updated summer law clerk postings
Some Things To Consider:
- Summer Full-Time Employment. Small and medium firms often are willing to employ first-year students at the end of their first year for the summer. Postings on Symplicity begin appearing in late February and March as firms begin to assess the summer caseload.
- Volunteer legal opportunities. Public interest organizations such as Legal Aid often take law student volunteers, as do many municipalities and judges. Part-time volunteer opportunities also give you the chance to take a class over the summer.
- Research Assistant to Law Professors. Several law professors look for students to assist them with research projects over the summer and during the school year; this is a great way to get additional research/writing experience and get a solid reference from a professor.
Additional ways to find employment:
- Networking with attorneys (including your CMLAA mentor) and others you know in the area to let them know you are interested in a position for the summer.
- Searching _www.martindale.com_ for firms that practice in the areas in which you are interested.
- Researching firms on their websites to determine if you’re interested in them.
- Attending the *Career Options Fair* (scheduled for March 10) in the spring to speak with legal employers that are invited.
- Participating in a summer* Externship* which is a great way to gain real life experience while also earning credits. See the Externship portions of the website for a description of the various places students can work in the area while being supervised at work by an attorney.
