International Human Rights Day

December 10 is International Human Rights Day! This year’s theme is “Speak Up Stop Discrimination.” Human rights defenders throughout the world work to combat racial and religious discrimination, and discrimination against indigenous peoples, migrants, minorities, people with disabilities and women.

Basic human rights of all types are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. More specific rights are protected under international law in a series of major multilateral treaties including:

  • International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights
  • International Convent on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights
  • Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination
  • Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women
  • Convention Against Torture
  • Convention on the Rights of the Child
  • International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers
  • Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
  • International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance
