Lexis MS Office: Automatic Cite Checking, TOA Creation, Split Screen to see Cited Cases, Shepards

Lexis Microsoft Office is  FREE for law students, faculty and staff.   Students can download it by logging into Lexis,  and click on the Free Downloads tab.  (Faculty and staff should look for the Lexis MS Office box in the lower middle of the page)  Once downloaded, the software will create a LexisNexis toolbar in MS Word, which enables you to perform the following functions:

  • Create hyperlinks to the citations in your document, as well as linked Shepard’s signals.  Click on the link, and see the full text of the case or Shepard’s report on the right hand side of the screen, side by side with your document.
  •  Drag and drop selected parts of documents from Lexis, which appear side by side with your document, into your text.  Lexis also put the citation into your document.
  • Check citation form, much like spellcheck, for Bluebook for briefs format, California or New York format.
  • Automatically create a table of authorities.
  • Highlight legal terms in the document and pull definitions from Lexis.
  • Highlight a passage of text, and retrieve relevant cases, briefs, and secondary source.
  • and more!
