Healthcare Changes Coming After End of COVID-19 National & Public Health Emergencies
With the 5/11/2023 end of the COVID-19 national emergency and public health emergency (PHE) declarations, there will be changes to the US healthcare system. The US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) website provides a comprehensive Coronavirus Disease 2019 page with information on CMS Waivers, Flexibilities and the Transition Forward, including provider-specific fact sheets on Coronavirus Waivers and Administrative Flexibilities that detail “which waivers and flexibilities have already been terminated, have been made permanent, or will end at the end of the PHE.” FYI, on 1/30/2023, the Biden Administration announced an extension of the COVID-19 national and public health emergency declarations to 5/11/2023. The Administration was responding to the 1/9/2023 introduction of H.R.J. Res. 7, which would end the national emergency, and the 1/17/2023 introduction of H.R. 382, which would end the public health emergency. [On 4/10/2023, H.R.J. Res. 7 became Public Law 118-3. Generally, a PHE declaration lasts 90 days, and can be extended.]
