2022 State of Mental Health in America Report: Ohio Highlights

Mental Health America, a leading nonprofit dedicated to promoting wellness and addressing the needs of those living with mental illness, has recently released its 2022 The State of Mental Health in America report. The report covers topics such as adult and youth prevalence of mental illness, adult and youth access to care, state rankings, and trend graphics. This year’s report includes two spotlight sections – one on suicidal ideation and another on disparities in mental health treatment for youth of color.

How did Ohio do in the report? Here are some highlights –

  • Ohio ranked 25th overall on lower prevalence of mental illness and higher rates of access to care.
  • For adults specifically, Ohio ranked 36th; for youth specifically, Ohio ranked 19th.
  • In the access to mental health care ranking, Ohio came in 22nd.
  • In Ohio, the percentage of adults with serious thoughts of suicide increased from 5.18% to 6.09%.
  • Ohio was included with the states with the largest increases in adults with any mental illness.
