State of Mental Health in America 2023 Report: How Ohio Is Doing

Mental Health America (MHA), a nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those with mental illness and promoting general mental health, has released its 2023 State of Mental Health In America report. The report looks at adult and youth prevalence of mental illness, adult and youth access to care, and mental health workforce availability.

Here is an overview of how Ohio ranked in comparison to other states in some of the measurements. All of the rankings are based on a scale from 1 to 51, where a lower score is better – indicating lower prevalence of mental illness and higher rates of access to care.

  • Overall, Ohio ranked 33.
  • For adult rankings, Ohio was a 38, taking into consideration factors such as any mental illness, substance disorder, thoughts of suicide, unmet need, and being uninsured.
  • For youth rankings, Ohio was a 27, taking into consideration the same factors as adult rankings.
  • For access to care, Ohio was a 21, taking into consideration factors such as not receiving treatment, uninsured status, private insurance not covering mental health issues, workforce availability.
  • For adults with serious thoughts of suicide, Ohio was 42, and for youth, 38.
  • For mental workforce availability, Ohio was 25.
