Westlaw Refresher: Top Takeaways

pop up window showing copy with reference optionsLegal Research Seminars kicked off this week with the Westlaw Refresher. In case you missed the Seminar held earlier this week, here are a few of the top takeaways, based on student feedback, to make your research easier.

  1. Copy with Reference – Use this tool to copy text from Westlaw to your Word document with the proper citation format. Select the text on Westlaw that you wish to copy, the tool box appears, then select Copy with Reference. You may specify the citation style you need, such as Ohio style or ALWD (same as Bluebook). Then paste the text into your Word document and the citation appears just below.
  2. Organize with Folders – Create separate folders for each of your research projects. Save court opinions, statutes, articles from secondary sources, and more, to save time instead of hunting for them again. You can also select text within an opinion, statute, article, etc. and save that quote to your folder. Useful if there is a specific quote you want to make sure you include in your paper.
  3. Practical Law – Special resource portal on Westlaw with searchable content pulled from secondary sources on a variety of civil legal topics. Provides charts, checklists, overviews, forms – great if you are assigned a new-to-you practice area. Makes getting to know a new topic area easy and efficient.

Remember, there is no Legal Research Seminar during the week of January 30th. Instead, check out the great events celebrating the opening of the Learning Commons. Legal Research Seminars return February 7th.
