Piracy Law Now and Then
C|M|LAW has modern piracy law covered. Prof. Milena Sterio [faculty bio], an expert on maritime piracy law, has participated in meetings of the United Nations Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia, and has been a member of the Piracy Expert Group. She is also the author of Piracy Off the Coast of Somalia: The Argument for Pirate Prosecutions in the National Courts of Kenya, The Seychelles, and Mauritius [full text] and Fighting Piracy in Somalia (and Elsewhere): Why More Is Needed [full text]. Prof. Sterio continues to be involved in developing legal and policy responses to maritime piracy today.
The Law Library of Congress can help researchers examine the law of piracy from an earlier era. It has digitized its collection of pre-1923 piracy trials. This historical collection of piracy trials is critical for understanding how the various nations of the world handled piracy issues before the year 1900. The full texts of the books are available from the Law Library of Congress website.
