In France v. Hamster – Top European Court Rules in Favor of Hamsters

The European Court of Justice (ECJ), the highest European court, ruled pro-hamster yesterday in the case of Commission v. France [read judgment]. The suit, brought by environmental group Sauvegarde Faune Sauvage (Safeguard Wildlife), sought to protect the Great Hamster of Alsace whose numbers have dropped to only 800 in all of France. The ECJ said that the government of France would be fined $24.6 million if it did not improve its agricultural and urbanization policies sufficiently to raise the number of Great Hamsters in the country to at least 1,500.
