The UN’s Treaty Signing Party

Every September at this time, the United Nations hosts its annual Treaty Event—an opportunity for representatives of countries to go to the UN in order to sign, ratify or accede to multilateral treaties. In his invitation to Member States, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed that the Treaty Event “provides a distinct opportunity for States to demonstrate their continuing commitment to the central role of the rule of law at the international and national levels.” Some of the treaties not yet in force included in the Treaty Event are:

• International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance
• Amendment to Annex B of the Kyoto Protocol
• Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty
• Convention on Jurisdictional Immunities of States and Their Property

Member States can also ratify treaties that are already in force, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity or the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
