Legislative You

Legislative aide talking to visiter.Law students are generally exposed to legislative history research during the course of their studies.   C-M College of Law students are also fortunate to have the opportunity to take a Legislation class.   But many law students do not grasp the importance of understanding the legislative process and how such understanding can assist their legal careers.   Beyond the obvious benefits of understanding legislative intent for legal practice, understanding the legislative process reveals how you – citizen, advocate, or lobbyist – can get involved in the legislative process.   During a recent visit to Washington DC to advocate for rheumatic disease concerns, I was very proud to meet with a C-M College of Law graduate working in a Representative’s office as a legislative aide.   What a great affirmation of our College’s curriculum and programs!   So when you’re fretting about finding a job, remember legislative and advocacy career options.   In addition to government legislative and public policy jobs, consider advocacy opportunities in volunteer health care organizations, professional associations, educational institutions, and businesses.
