This Just In: The Principal’s Legal Handbook
The Principal’s Legal Handbook, 6th edition, published by Cleveland State University partner Education Law Association, is a substantial revision of the 5th edition and highlights the most impactful issues faced by school administrators while offering practical guidance.
This hefty book (at over 800 pages) is broken into four sections an includes an introduction. The introduction provides an overview of the legal system and explains how to use the handbook to increase legal literacy. The sections are Students and the Law (discipline; freedom of expression; search and seizure; records; student promotion, retention, and graduation; child abuse; student sexual harassment; off-campus speech; truancy; and homeschooling), Special Education and the Law (federal disability law), Teachers and the Law (dismissal, certification, academic freedom and censorship, sexual harassment in the workplace, evaluations, student injury, documentation, and curriculum), and Schools and the Law (Every Student Succeeds Act, religion, copyright, charter schools, collective bargaining, school funding litigation, affirmative action, desegregation, and English Language Learners).
