What are Managed Legal Services?

With names like Axiom, and Clearspire they are the new “law firms” on the block.  Now they don’t call themselves law firms but rather “legal services companies” who provide “managed legal services”.

What’s the difference?  These companies employ salaried attorneys and do not give legal advice. Rather, they take on legal projects that in-house counsel knew about in advance and do not need to be counseled on.

These services are provided cheaper than the traditional use of outside counsel.  Billing is usually flat rate and not hourly.
