Professional Skills and Values Important to Attorneys

A recently published law review article contains the results of a survey of Arizona Lawyers, identifying the professional skills and values they find important.

Topping the list of important skills are:

  • Legal analysis and reasoning
  • Written communication
  • Legal research (library and computer)
  • Drafting legal documents
  • Listening
  • Oral communication
  • Working cooperatively with others as part of a team
  • Factual investigation
  • Organization and management of legal work
  • Interviewing and questioning
  • Problem solving

Law students might use these survey results to try and obtain these important skills during law school, or as keywords for writing resumes and cover letters.
