Conviction & Sentencing in Cambodia Genocide Trial
The International Law Prof Blog posts today extensively on the sentencing of Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch, the first person to be sentenced by the Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). Kaing Guek Eav was found guilty of crimes against humanity and grave breaches of the 1949 Geneva Conventions for his involvement at the S-21 detention center during the Cambodian genocide. The ECCC sentenced Kaing Guek Eav to 35 years of imprisonment, a sentence which has been reduced by 16 years for time served in pre-trial detention. According to the Cambodian Genocide Program, during the Cambodian genocide of 1975-1979 approximately 1.7 million people lost their lives – a figure that equates with 21% of the country’s population.
