Fast Facts on Mental Health from the ABA Profile of the Legal Profession 2021
The ABA’s Profile of the Legal Profession 2021 has a chapter devoted to Lawyer Well-Being. In this chapter, you can read that –
- 21% of all lawyers qualify as problem drinkers while 32% of lawyers under 30 qualify as problem drinkers
- 28% of lawyers struggle with depression, and 19% have symptoms of anxiety
- 5% of lawyers have had suicidal thoughts
- More women than men report moderate or severe stress (67% vs. 49%)
- 38% of lawyers report working long hours, with 9% saying they “never stop working”
- 23% of judges meet the criteria for stress that could be debilitating
