The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline provides 24/7, seven days a week, free and confidential support for people in crisis and distress all over the U.S. The service launched in July 2022, replacing the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Some highlights from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)’s performance metrics include:
- The 988 Lifeline has responded to over 14 million contacts, with over 4.5 million contacts coming in by text or chat.
- The 988 Lifeline receives around 60,000 calls a month from members of the LGBTQI+ community.
- Spanish language users call approximately 11,000 times a month.
