HR1628 Postponed for Consideration

US Capitol BuildingThis afternoon, the Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, postponed further consideration of House Resolution 1628.  This action was conducted in accordance with clause 1(c) of Rule 19 of the Rules of the House of Representatives.  HR 1628, the American Health Care Act of 2017, would have eliminated many of the provisions of the Patient Protections and Affordable Care Act (ACA).  Several health law analysts believe this action means House leaders will at least reconsider a more conservative approach to repealing the ACA, if not abandon ACA repeal efforts.

3/28 & 4/4 Legal Research Seminars

image of superhero womanIf you are planning on working this summer, the last two live Law Library Legal Research Seminars will be very important for you!

The Ohio Legal Research for Your Summer Associate Experience Seminar is Tuesday, March 28th, and the Getting Ready to Clerk Seminar is Tuesday, April 4th.  Each Seminar is 4:50pm-5:50pm, in Law Library Room A059.  Each Seminar is worth 25 points toward a Legal Research Seminar Letter of Recognition.

There are also two TWEN-based Law Library Legal Research Seminars, available through Friday, April 25th, that you can “attend” at your convenience:  Scholarly Writing (21:51 minutes; 25 points)  and  Research Management with Zotero (9:35 minutes; 8.5 points).

Here are key points about the Spring 2017 semester Law Library Legal Research Seminars:

  • We recently changed the name of our Seminars –  from “Research Certificate Seminar” to Legal Research Seminar.  No worries!  All of your past points carry over to our new Seminar series!
  • Law Library Legal Research Seminars are for C|M|Law students, including MLS/LLM students.
  • To access the TWEN-based Seminars, log onto Westlaw, then connect to TWEN, then click the “Add Course” button to display the C|M|Law Library Legal Research Seminars course in your “My Courses” list.
  • You do not need to register to take a live Seminar –  simply come to the Seminar(s) you want to attend.  We take attendance at each live Seminar, to be sure you are credited points as you earn them.
  • You earn 12.5 points for attending a live 30-minute Seminar, and 25 points for attending a live 60-minute Seminar.  You earn points for “attending” a TWEN-based Seminar by correctly answering at least 3/4 of the questions on that Seminar‘s quiz.  Your Seminar points are good for the entire time you are here at C|M|Law.  [You cannot earn points for attending the same Seminar twice.]
  • When you earn 100 points, you are awarded a Legal Research Seminar Letter of Recognition, and you can earn multiple Letters of Recognition.
  • If you earn a Letter of Recognition within the 2016-2017 academic year, you will be entered into a drawing for a $150 Amazon gift card!

Professor Sterio Publishes Blog Post on Return of Somali Pirates

M_STERIO.jpgProfessor and Associate Dean Milena Sterio published a blog post entitled “Somali Pirates Are Back?” on Communis Hostis Omnium, a blog which covers legal issues related to maritime piracy .  In her post, Professor Sterio discusses the recent successful piracy attack on Aris 13, an oil tanker which was sailing from Djibouti to Mogadishu.  This piracy attack was the first successful attack by Somali pirates in 2017; previously, there had been a lull in Somali pirate attacks for almost five years.
