Ohio’s County Boards of Elections

hand dropping ballot into box After Election Day, Ohio’s county Boards of Elections are still working hard. The election results you have seen are still technically unofficial. The county Boards of Elections have until November 29, 2016 to complete their official canvass. The canvass is the official count of the ballots for that election. The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections will release Official Results at its certification meeting on November 29, 2016.

Each of Ohio’s 88 counties has a county board of elections office that is responsible for administering local elections. Each county office is governed by a 4-person board, made up of two members from each major political party. The board members are appointed by the Secretary of State to 4-year terms. In addition to appointing county board members, the Secretary of State provides training, legal guidance, elections procedures, and campaign finance information to the Boards of Elections and their staff.

The Secretary of State’s website lists all election results in Ohio, except for local propositions. Local propositions can be found on your county Board of Elections’ website.
