The Voting Rights Act Turns 50

50 years ago today President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law. The Act, is landmark piece of federal legislation in the United States that prohibits racial discrimination in voting. Congress later amended the Act five times to expand its protections. The Act was designed to enforce the voting rights guaranteed by the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution.
