Spring 2015 Library Research Certificate Seminars

The Law Library has another great line-up of Research Certificate Seminars for C|M|LAW students this Spring 2015 semester.  Once again, we have a couple new ways for you to take a Seminar, and don’t forget our special prize opportunity!

 

Here are key points about the Law Library Spring 2015 Research Certificate Seminars:

  • You do not need to register in order to take a Seminar –  simply come to the Seminar(s) you want to attend.  We will take attendance at each Seminar, to be sure you are credited points as you earn them.
  • On Thursdays and Wednesdays throughout this semester, we are offering several 30-minute, very focused Seminars, in addition to 60-minute, in-depth Seminars.  Unless otherwise indicated, each Seminar will be in Law Library Room A059.
  • New!  We are offering one Webinar Seminar on April 1st.  No fooling!  Details on connecting will be distributed later this semester.
  • New!  We are offering two electronic Seminars via a TWEN page – you can take these at any time or day.  Check out the procedure and offerings on the C|M|Law Library Research Certificate Seminars TWEN page.
  • You earn 12.5 points for attending a 30-minute Seminar, and 25 points for attending a 60-minute Seminar.  [The same point system is used for the electronic Seminars on the TWEN page.]  Your Seminar points are good for the entire time you are here at C|M|Law.  When you earn 100 points, you will be awarded a Law Library Research Certificate.  You can also earn multiple Certificates.
  • If you earn a Certificate within the 2014-2015 academic year, you will be entered into a drawing for a $150 Amazon gift card!

Here is the complete listing of Spring 2015 semester Seminar dates, times, locations, and topics:

  • Thursday, January 29th, 5pm-5:30pm –  Research Strategies for Efficiency and Organization –  This Seminar will introduce you to broad strategies and tips for organizing your research and staying on track.
  • Thursday, February 5th, 4:50pm-5:50pm –  Terms & Connectors Searching –  Want to learn more in-depth methods for searching legal databases?  In this Seminar, we will work through many research issues and discuss how to construct effective terms & connectors search statements.
  • Wednesday, February 11th, 4:50pm-5:50pm –  Bloomberg Refresher –  This Seminar will review content areas of Bloomberg Law and how to effectively search this legal system.
  • Wednesday, February 25th, 4:50pm-5:50pm –  Lexis Advance & WestlawNext Refresher –  Feel like you’ve lost your edge searching Lexis Advance or WestlawNext?  This Seminar will help get you back on track with these two legal research systems.
  • Thursday, March 5th, 5pm-5:30pm –  Alternatives to the Lexis Advance and WestlawNext –  This Seminar will discuss content on, and how to search, low-cost and free alternatives to the Lexis Advance and WestlawNext systems.
  • Wednesday, March 18th, 5pm-5:30pm –  Cost-Effective Searching on Lexis Advance & WestlawNext –  This Seminar will review best practices for efficient and cost-effective research on the Lexis Advance and WestlawNext systems.
  • Thursday, March 26th, 5pm-5:30pm –  Bluebooking Refresher –  In this Seminar, we will review basic Bluebook citation for cases, statutes, and secondary sources and introduce some advanced citation elements.
  • Webinar –  Wednesday, April 1st, 4:50pm-5:50pm –  Ohio Legal Research for Your Summer Associate Experience –  Clerking or interning this summer, or want a great review before graduating?  This Seminar will discuss key methods and resources in Ohio legal research to help you ace your legal research projects.  Details on connecting to this Webinar will be distributed later this semester.
  • LB60 –  Thursday, April 9th, 4:50pm-5:50pm –  Getting Ready to Clerk –  In this Seminar, following a brief review of research tools to remember to be an effective law clerk, legal practitioners will discuss the types of projects to expect, how projects are typically assigned, the type of feedback you can expect, as well as overall tips and advice on how to best approach your work product.
