1/13 IOM Forum on Global Violence Prevention

Institute of Medicine LogoThe Institute of Medicine is holding a 2-day public Forum, 23-24 January 2013, in Washington, DC, “to explore the evidentiary basis for violence prevention across the lifespan and around the world.”  The Forum is open to the public, but registration is required.

Recognizing that successful violence prevention programs exist around the world, but a comprehensive approach is needed to systematically apply such programs to the problem, the Forum will:

  • Provide an ongoing, regular, evidence-based, impartial setting for the multidisciplinary exchange of information and ideas concerning violence prevention;
  • Illuminate policy, research, and practice priorities worthy of further study or investment; and
  • Gather information on the scientific basis and public health needs pertinent to global violence prevention.

Chaired by Jacquelyn C. Campbell, PhD, RN, and Mark L. Rosenberg, MD, MPP, the Forum’s ad hoc Committee of behavioral scientists, criminal justice professionals, social service providers, legal experts, and other experts will examine such questions as what violence prevention interventions have been proven to reduce different types of violence, and how can demonstrably effective interventions be adapted, adopted, linked, and scaled up in different cultural contexts around the world.
