American Planning Association Student Writing Competition

image of American Planning Association logoThe Planning and Law Division of the American Planning Association (APA) recently announced its 29th Annual Smith-Babcock-Williams Student Writing Competition.  Students enrolled at ABA-accredited law schools or schools listed in the 16th ed. of the Guide to Undergraduate and Graduate Education in Urban and Regional Planning, or who will complete a program of study leading to a J.D., LL.B, Masters or Ph.D. degree during the 2011-12 academic year, are eligible to enter.  Papers may be on any question of significance in planning, planning law, land use law, local government law, or environmental law.  The winning entry will be awarded $2,500 prize and submitted for publication to The Urban Lawyer, the journal of the American Bar Association Section of State & Local Government Law.  Additional prizes will be $500 for 2nd place, $250 for 3rd place, and possible Honorable Mentions.  The Competition submission deadline is Friday, 8 June 2012, and winners will be announced by 14 September 2012.  Full Competition details are available at the APA Planning and Law Division Web site.

The Competition is named for R. Marlin Smith, Richard Babcock, and Norman Williams, who were three leading figures in American city planning law.
